Reservoir Hill
On the Hill
This neighborhood is North of Bolton Hill and South of Druid Hill, which is bordered by Druid Hill Lake and a beautiful park that houses the Baltimore Zoo. Reservoir Hill is in the center of the city, extremely accessible to northern neighborhoods, such as Hampden and downtown to the Baltimore Harbor via 83 South.
This neighborhood has beautiful brownstones lining each street. There is also a deep sense of community here. You will find lovely playgrounds for the little ones and a number of community gardens. Our favorite black-owned coffee shop, Dovecote, is right around the corner and we love to visit the Baltimore Arboretum on a nice spring day.
Washington Village/Pigtown
Quaint but Close to the Action.
Washington Village is a very diverse section of Baltimore and historically home to many hard working Baltimoreans. More and more, graduate students, teachers, young professionals, and families are calling Pigtown home. It’s very close to amenities, such as the Ravens and Orioles Stadium, the Baltimore Casino and even Federal hill which is booming with restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Pigtown is also very close to the University of Maryland Baltimore campus and is home to a great black-owned carry-out HeyDaddy’s. Don’t forget to go to the Famous Nick’s Rotisserie for your favorite soul food dinner.
Mount Vernon
Downtown Charm
Mount Vernon is where the action is. If you like the downtown feel and an area with a high walkability score, this is the area for you. Mount Vernon is located in central Baltimore, just north of the Baltimore Harbor and is full of amenities such as bars, gyms, restaurants, nightlife, and the Penn Station railroad located just to the north in the Station North or Midtown/Belvedere neighborhood. Hop on the train for a short trip to Philly, New York, and Washington, DC.
There are a variety of home types including row homes, apartments, and condos. The centerpiece of Mount Vernon is the Washington Monument, which was the precursor to the monument of the same name. You will also find our favorite black owned hotel and restaurant, The Ivy Hotel on Biddle Street, as well as great places to Happy Hour (Sangria Bar and Lounge and Revival Hotel Restaurant and Bar). It’s close to the University of Maryland Baltimore to the south and Johns Hopkins University to the north.
Hampden
On the Avenue
Rising more and more in our esteem is Hampden, a neighborhood unto itself. It’s hip and it’s quirky with beautiful row homes and some stand alone houses. Located north of Reservoir Hill, Hampden is the perfect little city inside of a city. It’s home to high-end grocery stores, dine-in movie theaters, bars and restaurants on “The Avenue,” and great new market space, Whitehall Market. Did we mention Whitehall Market is home to our favorite black owned bakery? Grab your computer and your books, and head over to Crust By Mack for coffee or the famous jumbo lump crab pie for the the afternoon.
Bolton Hill
On the Hill Too
We’ve mentioned Reservoir Hill, but we should also mention Bolton Hill. On the other side of North Avenue, you’ll find the charming and artistic Bolton Hill. It’s where one of our founders lived during her first years in the City. Like Reservoir Hill, Bolton Hill also promises wonderful Brownstones, and is home to Maryland Institute College of Art and its college students. You will find a diverse mix of residents in this neighborhood, all friendly. There is also a number of quaint, hidden parks and coffee shops including the John Street Park, Lion Park, Arnold Sumpter Park, and the famous On The Hill Cafe.
